Abstract:

A method is developed for calculating the axial mean metal temperatures of the shells and individual tubepasses of TEMA Type E shell-and-tube heat exchangers. It is valid for all cases where the mean temperature difference based on uniform overall heat transfer coefficient is considered applicable, since it is based on exactly the same assumptions. The mode of presentation varies from case to case as a function of the number of tubepasses and the direction of shellside flow. The use to which the metal temperatures are put is beyond the scope of this report. It was originally commissioned, however, to determine a mean tube bundle temperature for use in TEMA Standards' fixed tubesheet design paragraphs, and some qualitative comments on this and related matters are offered. In Appendix B the calculational procedures are summarized.
