The HTRI Exchanger Design Margin Task Force (EDMTF) developed a new approach to adding design margin to heat exchangers and identified clean services where design allowances for fouling are not recommended. This report outlines the development of the Resistance Factor Design Method for specification of design margins and compares this new method to other methods using several case studies. Designers can use the resistance factor to create more accurate thermal designs with HTRI Xchanger Suite while effectively employing fouling mitigation design strategies as needed during the design process.
