RR-5 Implementation of a Heat Exchanger Simulation Code using Advanced Computational Methods
This report describes the implementation of an advanced three-dimensional computer simulation code for shellside flow in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger and presents the governing partial differential equations and their formulation in a general solution scheme. Details about testing and the structure of the computer code are given, and an access port subroutine that permits proprietary correlations and added formulations is described. Particular emphasis is given to the use of a linearized source term that allows exceptional flexibility in applying boundary conditions and to the application of the code to a wide variety of heat exchanger problems. This flexibility and the cylindrical geometry are specifically designed to simulate shellside flow in shell-and-tube heat exchangers.
The report closes with nomenclature and references and is followed by extensive appendices that detail the code. Future development of the simulation code will be documented by updates and additions to the appendices.
