CS-9 Improvements to the Resistance Proration Method for Shellside Condensation of Mixtures in the Presence of Noncondensable Gases
For over two decades, HTRI has conducted analytic and experimental research on shellside condensation of mixtures and pure components with and without noncondensable gases. More than 1800 experimental data runs over a wide test range were conducted from 1978 to 1987 on the HTRI Boiling-Condensation Unit. Development and improvement of heat transfer and pressure drop correlations are documented in Reports CS-1 through CS-8 and TPF-2 through TPF-4. To improve current methods, HTRI further analyzed data of mixtures and pure component condensation with a high concentration of noncondensable gases.
This report documents an improvement to the HTRI Resistance Proration Method (RPM) for shellside condensation of mixtures and pure components in the presence of noncondensable gases on horizontal tube bundles. An improved correction factor, Cmd, is expressed in terms of the flow regime, effective mass diffusion, noncondensable mole fraction, and bundle geometry. The improved method predicts the heat transfer coefficient within ± 25 percent of measured data.
