Abstract:
HTRI’s review of the VDI Heat Atlas [1] recommendation for downflow boiling shows that it is not adequate as a design criterion. HTRI has developed a more general correction factor based on literature data that is a function of the relative presence of nucleate and convective boiling mechanisms. Tentative recommendations for pressure drop, based on the limited data available, are made here. This report also recommends modifying IST so that it provides reasonable initial predictions of downflow flow boiling heat transfer and pressure drop prior to obtaining our own data.
