Abstract:

This report reviews improvements in boiling heat transfer through the use of passive surface enhancements. Commercial tubes enhanced with porous coatings or with integral structural changes provide a larger surface area for heat transfer and may increase the nucleation site density when compared with plain tubes. Boiling heat transfer enhancement for fluids increases as the heat flux, pressure, and boiling range of mixtures decrease. This review identifies recent studies of commercially relevant surfaces and presents models and correlations that may ultimately improve performance prediction in software such as HTRI Xchanger Suite.
